Monte-Carlo Masters 2020 preview: Who can stop Nadal?
The Monte-Carlo Masters is the first of three clay court Masters events and will run from April 12th – April 19th, 2020. The first championships were held in 1987 and great champions such as Mats Wilander, Boris Becker and Roger Federer have played at this tournament.
Rafael Nadal has dominated this event winning a record 11 times and on eight consecutive occasions between 2005 and 2012. The ‘King of Clay’ was upset in the semi-finals last year by eventual champion, Fabio Fognini who won his first Masters title at this tournament.
Nadal will be the huge favourite to win again in France. Surprisingly, the world number two only captured one of the three clay court Masters tournaments in 2019, but he still went onto win an unprecedented 12th French Open.
Novak Djokovic is the only man to beat Nadal in a final here and will seek a third crown. Djokovic is looking ominous as he is undefeated this season.
World number four, Daniil Medvedev will be a threat to Nadal and Djokovic. He defeated the latter in the quarter-finals last year and his game is suited for clay given his defence and ability to absorb power.
