Why Jose Mourinho always praised David de Gea
In 2018, former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho left the footballing world perplexed after he made the following statement, “I consider one of the best jobs of my career to finish second with Manchester United in the Premier League.”
The Portuguese coach had proven himself to be a serial winner over the span of his 20 years in management, winning titles and domestic cups in Portugal, Spain, Italy and, of course, England. Therefore his comments left many bemused – there was even an argument to say of his two full seasons at Old Trafford, his first was the more successful, with his side winning both the League Cup and Europa League.
In the time that has passed since his sacking, we know that his comments have looked less outlandish given United have failed to replicate a top-two finish since that campaign and it’s now widely accepted that current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in a position of overseeing a rebuild at the club.
So just how good were United that season and what was behind their standout campaign?
